You can update jdk, however, you will need to configure tomcat5 and mod_jk to use the updated versions. RHEL5 uses a configuration utility called alternatives that should be used if at all possible. For instance:

# yum install java-1.6.0-sun-devel
# /usr/sbin/alternatives --config java
# /usr/sbin/alternatives --config javac
# java --version
# javac --version
# /etc/init.d/httpd restart
# /etc/init.d/tomcat5 restart

I have not tested the above, but I will once I get into the office today.
